History: The Diamond Knot is a legend among the divers of the Pacific Northwest, and is one of the most rewarding wrecks in the area. This 360 ft. (110 m.) long cargo ship rests in Cresent Bay just off of Tongue Point in Washington State. The ship sank on August 13, 1947 after colliding with the SS Fenn Victory in heavy fog. The two ships had to be pulled apart by a group of tugs and Coast Guard vessels. The Diamond Knot was then towed towards Crescent Bay with the hopes of beaching her there. She was overcome by the weather conditions and sank, carrying 154,000 cases of Alaskan canned salmon. The cargo was then valued at over four million dollars and represented ten percent of the Alaska salmon catch that year. In 1947 one of the largest salvage operations ever along this coast, removed most of the precious cargo from its watery grave. Using an innovative water vacuum to suck up the cans, large holes were cut in the side of the ship to access the cargo holds, which eventually caused the middle section of the wreck to collapse. At the completion of the salvage, most of the canned salmon was recovered and over time this ship has become one of the best dive sites along the coast.

Above Water: There is very little to distinguish where this wreck sits, other than the makeshift floating markers tied to it.

Underwater: The Diamond Knot rests on her starboard side in 135 ft. (40 m.) at the bow, with the port side of the stern section sitting at around 70 ft. (21 m.) The mid-section has collapsed on itself. The stern and superstructure are still intact, and cargo holds are now accessible due to the openings cut from salvage operations, as well as rusting cargo hatches. Every square inch of her massive structure is covered with life. Huge schools of Black and Yellowtail rockfish inhabit the wreckage along with wolfeels and warbonnets. I cannot express how amazing this dive is with just words: take a camera to remember its greatness.

Hazards: Boat traffic, current, entanglement, overhead environment - The current can be very unpredictable around the wreck. It is incredibly important to watch for changes while you dive, or you may end up doing a free ascent in green water. Carrying the proper safety equipment and signaling devices may not always guarantee a pickup by your boat. Weather can drastically change surface conditions in a short period of time - be careful.
